Considering Neuropsychological Evaluation and Testing?

Neuropsychological testing and evaluations are necessary to determine the treatment options for neurodevelopment disorders, neurological conditions, mental health disorders, and medical conditions associated with altered brain functioning and development, for either yourself, or your child. You may also want a neuropsychological test, or neuropsychological evaluation, to understand more about how your cognitive functioning may be impairing aspects of daily life, or to learn more about your child’s school learning potential. Neuropsychological assessments can also highlight an individual’s neurocognitive strengths and weaknesses, assist in providing accurate diagnosis of underlying weaknesses or conditions, and measure cognitive functioning to determine eligibility for certain services. The results of a neuropsychological evaluation can be used to document, or clarify, a diagnosis and provide targeted recommendations for intervention, specialized services, or academic accommodations to optimize their full potential in school, work, and everyday life.

For children experiencing processing speed difficulties, or learning difficulties, including reading, writing, or math, testing may be needed. Areas where children may experience executive functioning difficulties include:

·  Solving problems with planning and organizational skills

·  Time management

·  Mental and behavioral flexibility

·  Emotional control and working memory

·  Starting and finishing tasks promptly and independently

·  Capacity to assess and reflect upon behavior, performance, and progress towards accomplishing goals

Other causes for neuropsychological assessments include visual spatial, visual motor, or fine motor difficulties, language problems, or a history of neurological conditions, including notable birth history that can impact brain functioning (e.g., premature birth, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, brain tumor, prenatal drug, or alcohol exposure).

Neuropsychological testing results can also be used to optimize a student’s learning potential in school. Neuropsychological assessments can provide targeted treatment planning, including academic accommodations and services in school (e.g., 504 Plan, Individualized Education Plan). If your child has previously been assessed, an updated evaluation can be beneficial for tracking changes in neurocognitive functioning over time.

Students interested in pursuing higher education can also utilize neuropsychological testing and evaluations to understand their college potential. If a student has struggled to reach their full academic potential or is currently in high school and has previously been diagnosed with ADHD/ADD, they may be concerned about their ability to succeed in college. For potential college students with previous diagnosis, a neuropsychological evaluation is often required by colleges and universities to provide formal documentation of a disorder or diagnosis (e.g., ADHD/ADD, Dyslexia or other Learning Disability) and to receive academic accommodations at the college level. A comprehensive neuropsychological test and evaluation can help to officially document academic accommodations for a successful college experience, including allowance for extended time on tests, notetaking assistance, a distraction-reduced testing environment, and more.
